Oregon & Washington

These two states in the northwest of USA are the theme of the German-American Volksfest in 2009. In 2009 the state of Oregon celebrates 150 years as a state.

In Seattle and Portland beats the heart of the northwest.

These modern metropolises combine the traditions of the old and feelings of the modern in  an interesting manner. Oregon and Washington are known as the Outdoor paradise. Here unique sceneries invite one to all kinds of activities — from the wild coasts of the Pacific over the volcano summits of the Cascades to the deserts of Oregon. Don’t forget to visit one of the extensive national parks with rain forests and glaciers. This is only a few of the interesting things that the adventurous can find in the northwest.

As the scenery varies, so different are the traditions
and roots of the people living in the Northwest. Many thousands of pioneers traveled over the legendary Oregon Trail, placed their dreams on this peace of America. But before the pioneers came to Oregon and Washington, the culture of the „First Nations“ began long before the colonial age.

Today the modern, multicultural society in the northwest of USA is lived as naturally. US citizens of the most varied origins live in harmonious cooperation and are happy to show visitors to this area how this harmony works.

On the paths of the Native Americans

The Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest are the best educated and wealthiest of all the Native American tribes in North America. In both states live Indian people whose cultural heiretage  you can learn about. Many excellent museums like the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute in Pendleton which show the history and traditions of this tribe in an interesting manne. South of Mount Hood you find the Indian reservation of Warm Springs. A visit in the museum there, introduces one to the life-style and history of the Wasco-and Paiute tribes. Especially attractive, is the recreation area Kah-Nee-Ta with its mineral hot springs and sunshine nearly every day of the year. The hotel is built in the shape of an arrow and is run totaly by the members of the Warm Springs tribe. The Indian festivals and Indian markets which take place in both states are fascinating places to visit. Particularly in August and September there are Pow Wow-Festivals and in May the Indian Market in Portland is a must for every tourist.

Ist Curtain time for the theater and music scene.

Seattle and Portland are real highlights for cultural fans. The Opera House in Seattle invites you the whole year long to high-class symphony concerts. Here is also the cradle of Grunge, here started many cult bands like nirvana or Pearl Jam. Five operas provide an unbelievable program during the season from September till May and, in addition, there is an opera in the summer. And the classical Pacific Northwest Ballet enjoys national recognition in particular for its Nutcracker performances in December.

Also in Portland you can expect a rich cultural offering. Friends of classic are drawn magically to the Oregon Symphony, the Oregon Ballet Theater and Portland Opera. The unbelievable design of the Waterfront parks with its great varity of floral and tree arrangments offer an extremely attractive backdrop for the numerous summer festivals.

Only few steps away, to the north of the parks, under the Burnside Bridge you have a good chance to experience  a lively hustel and bustel with different types of music. A cultural tour of a different kind, is offered by the coach line Number 63 which connects all the places of interest and museums in the interier of the city.

Anyone who is interested in Indian art, should make an excursion to the Portland Art Museum, the oldest art museum of the Pacific northwest.
